Shirley Lee Birchfield Smith, 81, Johnson City passed away Thursday, September 17, 2026 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 23, 1945 in Roan Mountain to the late Ellick and Bonnie Townsend Birchfield. Shirley was a 1964 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was retired from Food Lion after 42 years of service. She was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton. Her family was her number one thing in life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Billy Jack Smith, four brothers: Cecil, Worley, Jim and Steve Birchfield and three sisters: Ruby Guinn, Jean Lund and Jo Cagle.

Survivors include her children: Jill (Greg) Luster and Jack Smith. One Grandson: Benjamin Luster. Four Sisters: Kathy (Wayne) Humphrey, Judy (Donnie) Davenport, Joyce (George) Richmond and Mary Burleson. And Two Brothers: L.J. (Teresa) Birchfield and Charlie Birchfield. Several nieces and nephews. Her Sisters-In-Law: Debbie Wheat, Denessa (Steve) and Linda (Worley) Birchfield. Also her Granddog “Bishop”.

A Service to Celebrate the life of Shirley will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2026 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Jeremy Burleson, Pastor Steve Burleson and Pastor Todd Ellis officiating. Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2026 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be: Donnie Davenport, Mark Davenport, Chad Gough, Turtle Scalf, Wesley Whaley and Mikie Wells. The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Keith Cook, Amber Barker and the staff of Corner Stone Health Care. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 12:20 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
