Shelby Jean Hughes, 87, Hampton passed away Saturday, October 17, 2026 at the residence of her daughter. Shelby was born November 10, 1939 in Elizabethton to the late Albert and Stella Marie Street Simerly. She attended Hampton High School. She was formerly employed at the Linville Ridge Country Club. She loved to sit on the porch and watch the sun set, go to car shows and go camping. She was a member of Hampton Christian Church but attended Southside Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by his husband of 58 years Billy Wayne Hughes who passed away January 30, 2019, by four brothers: Norman, D.C., Ed and Harlan Simerly, One Sister: Linda Birchfield and two nephews Brian Chambers and Travis Simerly.

Survivors include her daughter: Patricia “Susie” Hughes Breeden & husband Ronnie, Jonesborough. Three Brothers: Gary Simerly & wife Jeanne, Brooks Simerly & Wife Sandy and Nick Simerly. Several nieces & nephews. Also her two best buddies “Wichita” & “Tootles”

Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 22, 2026 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) with Mr. Caleb Penwell, Minister officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday.
