Obituary

Opal Mae Ward Baird, 90, Hampton, went home to be with her Lord, Wednesday, April 15, 2026 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was born March 20, 1936 in Lebanon, Virginia to the late Frank & Inez Griffith Ward. She had lived most of her life in Carter County. Mrs Baird was retired from the Cafeteria Department of the Hampton Elementary School where she had worked for 25 years. She loved her Grandchildren, gardening, Embroidery and loved her cats that she had in the past. She was a member of the Hampton Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Jasper William Baird who passed away May 26, 2024 and seven siblings.

Survivors include Three Children: Lora (Mike) Odom, David (Felecia) Baird and Karen (Tony) Simpson. Seven Grandchildren: Jennifer Carden, Michael Shepard, Stacey Proffitt, Christopher Johnson, Matthew Stocton, Alex Odom and Jacob Baird. Seven Great Grandchildren. Also several nieces and nephews. Her special friend: Bonnie Crabtree, her life long friend: June Bailey and special Nursing Home Friends: Margaret Hammitt and the late Barbara Fox.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 2026 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) with Pastor Dwayne Calhoun officiating. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday will be: Tony Simpson, Seth Proffitt, Christopher Johnson, Matthew Stocton, Jacob Baird and Lary LeSueur. Honorary Pallbearers will be Former Students and Staff of Hampton Elementary School. The family would like to express a very special thank you to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home especially Tim Andrews for the excellent care she received. Family and friends will assemble at the Mountain Home Cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Elizabethton/Carter County Animal Shelter, 253 Sycamore Shoals Drive, Elizabethton, Tenn. 37643.
