Martha Elaine Smith, 48, Roan Mountain, passed away Thursday, July 9, 2026 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born June 19, 1978 in Banner Elk, North Carolina. Martha was a graduate of Avery County High School, Newland, North Carolina. She was employed for 17 years at The Waters of Roan Highlands as Business Office Manager. She loved to work out, go shopping with her daughter and sisters and loved animals. Martha was a member of Ivy Heights Free Will Baptist Church, Newland, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by a son: Eli Joseph Smith.

Survivors include a daughter: Ava Marie Smith, Her Parents: Barry and Elvie Clawson Sheppard. Three Sisters: Wendy (Duane) Buchanan, Sarah (Jack) McCloud and her twin sister Margaret (Danny) Simerly. Several nieces and nephews. Also several aunts and uncles. Her boy-friend: Matthew Zeolia. Also her dog Daisey and her cats Ripples and Mittens.

A Service To Celebrate the life of Martha will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 11, 2026 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Terry Jones officiating. Graveside Service will be conducted at 12 Noon Sunday, July 12, 2026 in the Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Hampton. Music will be provided by Misty Lunsford. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 11:50 a.m. Sunday will be: Duane Buchanan, Jack McCloud, Danny Simerly, Duane Alan Buchanan, Nathan McCloud and Hunter Rice.
