In Loving Memory of Larry Dean Hughes

June 6, 1945 – August 20, 2026

Larry Dean Hughes, age 81, passed away peacefully at the Johnson City Medical Center, on August 20, 2026, in Johnson City, Tennessee, surrounded by those who loved him.

Born in Banner Elk, North Carolina, on June 6, 1945, to the late Leonard and Maxine Hughes, Larry was a man who deeply loved his country and his family above all else. He proudly served in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany as a military postmaster. Following his honorable service, he earned his degree from East Tennessee State University. Larry dedicated his professional career to public service, eventually retiring after many years with the Tennessee Department of Human Services.

An avid collector at heart, Larry found great joy in collecting vintage toys and vinyl records, and he harbored a lifelong passion for antique cars—holding a particularly special fondness for classic Fords. Beyond his hobbies, Larry was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his lifelong love of music and singing, and his friendly nature—he never met a stranger and truly loved talking to everyone he came across. Above all, he cherished spending time with the family he loved so deeply.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Shirley Hughes; his daughter, Teri Reach and her husband, Eric; his granddaughter, Alexandra Reach; his brother, James "Jim" Hughes and his wife, Betty; nephews James “Jimmy” Hughes, II and his wife Lori, and Michael Hughes; and a host of extended family members and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Maxine Hughes.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Larry’s life. A graveside service will be held Monday, August 24, at 1:00 p.m. at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Lincoln Shelton officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Military Honors will be provided. Friends may pay their respects at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until 12 noon Monday.
