Johnny Wayne McGee, born November 13, 1949 to the late Walter Edward McGee and Winona Gail "Cricket" McGee, passed away peacefully in his home on April 4, 2024 after a brief illness, with his family and his beloved dog, Bella, by his side. Johnny graduated from Hampton High School in 1967, where he was a standout quarterback for the football team. He married the love of his life, Brenda Kay Humphrey, on December 23, 1969 and the two recently celebrated their 55th anniversary. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping, piddling outside, playing his guitar, and most of all, teaching and watching his children and granddaughters play sports. He was a long time member of Gap Creek Christian Church in Elizabethton, and was a true reflection of a Godly man. John was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran and served in The United States Army from 1970 to 1975 before being honorably discharged. His unrelenting loyalty, initiative and perseverance brought him wide acclaim, inspired others and reflected distinct credit upon himself and the United States Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his nephew, Troy McGee and his brother-in-law, Tony Ruston.

In addition to his wife, those left to cherish his memory are his children, Jeremy "Bo" McGee (Kylie) and Kasey Hommel (Josh), granddaughters Tori Miller, Bayley McGee, Peyton McGee, Adalyn Hommel, and Mia Hommel, great granddaughter Landry Miller, brothers Bobby McGee (Kathy) and Eddie McGee (Ginny), and sisters Sheila Ruston and Jackie Matheson (Jim). Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Craig Layfield officiating. Those who wish to meet at the funeral home will assemble at 12:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Memorial Funeral Home. Active Pallbearers will be: Josh Hommel, Laban Peterson, Corey McKinney, Rusty Pippin, Stacie McKinney, and Antony Bandera. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Anthony Lyons, Wayne Carr, Larry Miller, Franklin Lane, and Jon Whitson. Military Honors will be provided by Veterans Honor Guard, DAV. 39, Bluff City. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Johnny's memory to the VA Medical Center (Mountain Home, Tennessee) or Gap Creek Christian Church (1840 Gap Creek Road, Elizabethton, Tennessee).
