Obituary

Glen Townsend, 90, Johnson City, passed away October 2, 2026 at the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. Glen was born in Sullivan County, and was a resident of Carter County for most of his life. He was a son of the late Lee and Hattie Hodges Townsend. Glen was preceded in death by four brothers: Hobert, Ford, Rex, and Bob; two nephews, and a niece. He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church and attended Central Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Giant Wholesale and Fleming Foods and loved gospel music, traveling and camping, and following the UT Volunteers and the Atlanta Braves.

Survivors include his loving wife of 68 years, Margaret Buck Townsend, who always stayed by his side, a son of whom he was proud, David and his partner, Christi Brooks and her daughter, Cassandra Brooks, who was like a granddaughter to Glen. Glen is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Ruby Whitehead and Betty Townsend; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 8, 2026 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Gary Edwards officiating. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday will be: Tom Kellum, Travis Thompson, Chuck Milam, Alex Trivette, Dewey Hill and Gene Carrier. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Kenneth Howell and Kenneth Arwood. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials in memory of Glen be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105 or Ronald McDonald House, 418 N. State of Franklin Road, Johnson City, Tenn. 37604. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday.
