Earl J."Scruggs" Hughes, 82, Newland, North Carolina, passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2023 at his residence. He was born May 6, 1941 in Avery County, NC to the late Sid & Verna English Hughes. He was a retired Steel Worker and Carpenter. Mr. Hughes loved gardening, working in flowers and Blue Grass Music. He was a member of Ivy Heights Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death three brothers: Otha, Leonard and Johnny Hughes.
Survivors include his wife Patricia Guinn Hughes. Three Daughters: Donna (Greg) Hughes, Newland, North Carolina, Rhonda (Troy) Johnson, Burnsville, North Carolina and Connie (Larry) Sparks, Spruce Pine, North Carolina. Seven Grandchildren, Five Great Grandchildren. Three Sisters: Helen Banner and Sandra Hughes (Douglas) both of Newland, North Carolina and Janice (Joe) Bailey, Marion, North Carolina. His four legged friends: Lucy & Hunter. A special friend: Eula (Granny) Jarrett. Earl also shared a step son, Troy Mclauglin (Beth) with Pat. The late Randall Townsend all of Roan Mountain TN. They shared four grand kids and three great grand kids from her side of the family.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, October 7, 2023 in the Peoples Church, Roaring Creek, Newland, NC with Pastor Barry Shepard and Pastor Chris Nance officiating. Interment will follow in the Hughes Cemetery. Music will be provided by the Barry Shepard Family. Active Pallbearers will be; Joshua Gaunt, Darrell Sullins, Daniel Hughes, Tyler Hutchenson, Marty Hughes, Zander Hughes and Michael Sparks. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Hospice of Avery County for the excellent care he received during his illness. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday prior to the service. Condolences may be sent to the family at our web-site www.memorialfcelizabethton.com.
